GLOBAL HUG YOUR KID DAY
Global Hug Your Kids Day is a day that celebrates the bond between a parent and child. It was started by Michelle Nichols in 2008, ten years after her son, Mark died from brain cancer. This day serves as a reminder for parents to show their child some affection, especially if they work a lot or spend a lot of hours away from the home and away from their children..
Hugging has been around for centuries as an act to show affection or empathy through action. Hugging can serve as a greeting, a goodbye, sympathy, support and/or gratitude. Originating from the Norse word 'hugga', which means to comfort.
Hugging is also good for your health. It releases a chemical in the brain called oxytocin into your bloodstream. This is sometimes referred to as the 'feel good' chemical. And it’s something we all want to feel and pass along. On this national Hug Your Kid Day you can be sure to give your little just what the doctor ordered, a good feeling and a positive moment with their favorite big person.
Hugging also increases bonding and closeness, while at the same time improving mood and reducing anxiety. Studies show that hugging a child can ease pain signals and boost oxygen levels, as well as helping their brain grow, which makes them less susceptible to infections, as well as illnesses like hypothermia or hypoglycemia.
This is why hugging your child is so important. Hugging makes children feel loved, while at the same time producing stimuli to help them grow a smarter, healthier brain. Also, hugging is good for You! Not only does it strengthen your bond with your little child, but it is also physically good for the parents due to the oxytocin boost.
